KANU Disowns Nick Salat's Announcement that the Party Has Joined NASA

KANU Secretary-General Nick Salat caused confusion during CORD's Thursday meeting at the Bomas of Kenya after he announced that the cockerel party had joined the National Super Alliance (NASA).

Salat was among other Opposition leaders including Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetangula and Musalia Mudavadi, who signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to wok together in a bid to ouster President Uhuru Kenyatta during the August 8 elections.

However, KANU's National Executive Council member Zipporah Kittony has termed Salat's announcement as personal views that don't represent the position of the party.

Mrs Kittony stated that Salat attended the NASA meeting on his own accord thus KANU had not agreed to join the Opposition's declaration.

“Since the party has not convened the National Delegates Conference (NDC) as per the constitution to deliberate on this particular matter, the remarks by the Secretary-General are therefore not official as they have not been subjected to the internal constitutional processes for ratification,” Mrs Kittony affirmed.

She also added that KANU was impressed by the Opposition's show of unity stating, “the resolve by Opposition leaders to field one presidential candidate is a milestone for Kenya's growing democracy.”

Meanwhile, Mr Odinga, during the meeting, announced that the planned mass demonstration over the controversial Election Laws had been postponed.

The former Prime Minister stated that this would be put on hold to allow for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) mass voter registration starting January 16, 2017.
