Kenya Defence Force (KDF) officers from the Kenya Navy base in Mtongwe are reported to have shot and killed a man claimed to be mentally challenged.
The officers reportedly acted after Ndoro Mwembe,26, threw stones at a navy van ferrying school children injuring six and damaging the vehicle's windows.
According to KDF, their officers chased Mwembe for a while and tried to arrest him.
"It was very early and officer could not take chances. His main aim was to take away police guns. Residents should always cooperate with locals by giving information," Military Spokesman David Obonyo was quoted by the Star.
Reports indicate that Mwembe was shot dead at around 6am in Dona Olinda Primary school.
The killing has been sharply criticized by Human Rights Activists in the area who argued that the officers could have instead arrested the suspect.
