Kenya Met Issues Sunday Evening Heavy Downpour Warning to Nairobi Residents

Kenya Meteorology Department (Kenya Met) on Sunday, April 28, informed Nairobi residents to brace themselves for a heavy downpour later in the day.

In a statement, Kenya Met stated that the floods which are in the third week were not projected to relent soon. 

“Heavy rainfall expected in parts of Nairobi metropolitan this Sunday. Stay weather-aware,” Nairobi residents were warned.

Nairobi Metropolitan covers the capital city as well as parts of Kiambu, Machakos and Kajiado Counties.

Embakasi East and South are expected to experience the highest amount of rain above 80 millimetres. 

Flooding is also feared in; Starehe, Makadara, Kamukunji, Embakasi West and parts of Embakasi Central.

Mathare and Ruaraka residents have also been warned of the risk of flooding with rainfall ranging from 50 and 70 millimetres.

Other regions to experience heavy downpours of above 50 millimetres include; Roysambu, Kigumo, Kangema, Ruiru and Juja. 

Moderate rainfall will also be experienced in Dagoretti South and North, Westlands, and Kasarani.

Kenya Met’s warning comes at a time when all 47 counties in Kenya have been affected by the heavy rains projected to last until mid-May. 

To help Kenyans who have been displaced by floods, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday led the distribution of foodstuffs to families affected by floods at Mathare North Primary School. 

The National Youth Service has also been tasked with preparing makeshift homes for over 16,000 households displaced by the heavy rains.
