Kenyan Man Jailed in the US After 9 Years on the Run

Nine years of running from the law came to an abrupt end for a Kenyan man after a US court sentenced him for a crime he committed in 2004.

The accused, Wilfred Christopher Olalo was charged with drunk driving.

On the fateful day in December 2004, Olalo was driving under heavy influence of alcohol, causing three road crashes in less than 30 minutes.

In one of the crashes, he rammed into the back of a car, critically injuring a 76 year old retired cop- Joseph O’Brien.

When the police arrested him, Olalo was too drunk to even stand without support.

He was charged in a court of law in 2006 and found guilty, set to be sentenced on a later date.

O'Brien later succumbed to the injuries sustained in the accident and died in the same year.

The court had asked Olalo to submit his passport, pending the sentencing but he instead fled to Kenya.

Through cooperation between the Interpol and the Kenyan police, the accused was arrested and taken back to the states.

On Wednesday, he was sentenced to three years and 60 days in prison.

He however faces more charges relating to his having fled and gone into hiding which could earn him five more years in prison.

According to The Nation, Oledo apologized to the family of the deceased, although he said he does not recall the accident taking place.
