Kenya's Trending Topics on 9th May 2017

Social media was on Tuesday set ablaze with discussions on some of the hottest topics of the day. Here are today's trending topics:

Nakumatt

The Supermarket chain has been a topic of discussion after it announced that it would be shutting down more branches following last week's closure of its Haile Selassie Avenue branch. 

The top supermarket stated that the branches to be closed were performing poorly branches in Kenya and Uganda as part of cost-cutting measures aimed at saving the retailer Sh1.5 billion annually.

The chain did not, however, disclose the total number of branches that will cease to operate under the move.

Most comments on the topic expressed their concerns stating that shutting down of more branches would lead to unemployment.

Kirinyaga County

Kirinyaga county hit the trends after a building under construction in Kutus town collapsed and trapped an unknown number of people.

Most comments on the trend conveyed sympathy messages to the affected and congratulated the response teams for their quick response.

The hashtag has been a topic of discussion after a ferry broke down on Tuesday morning with passengers onboard.

Hundreds of people were left stranded in the early morning incident.

Most users who commented on the hashtag gave updates on what was happening at the crossing channel.

#ElectionCoverage

Election coverage was a topic of discussion after the media stakeholders announced how it planned to cover the 2017 General Election.

They also announced that the 2017 presidential debates would be held on July 10 and 24 with that of the running mates slated for July 17.

Most people expressed concerns with how the media was covering the campaigns with others claiming that the coverage was biased and favoured some candidates.

The hashtag hit the trends after USAID cut funding on health including funding for HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases.

Most Kenyans used the hashtag to express their views on the matter with many people questioning why USAID cut funding and why the media had given the story a blackout.
