Kenya's Trending Topics on Monday January 9th, 2017

1. Education CS Fred Matiang'i

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i became the subject of online conversation after he dismissed calls to remark the KCSE 2016 results.

Dr Matiang'i also announced that they would soon present the proposed new curriculum to stakeholders.

2. #MarkToo and  #RipMarkToo

Former nominated Member of Parliament (MP) Mark Too was laid to rest on Monday at his home in Kapseret, Uasin Gishu County.

As the burial ceremony was ongoing, a section of Kenyans took to social media to pay tribute to the fallen leader under the hashtag #MarkToo and #RipMarkToo.

Mr Too died on New Year's eve and his burial was attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta among other dignitaries.

3. Kenya Power

The hashtag was trending on the number one position on Monday morning after a massive blackout was experienced in Nairobi, Mount Kenya and the Coast region.

Kenya Power took to Twitter and apologised stating that their team was on the ground working to restore power.

4. Thika

Thika became a trending topic after a four-year-old boy was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Friday at their home in Thika, Kiambu County. 

The family has been appealing to the public through social media to help them in finding Kelson Kimani

The gang is said to have raided the home of Catherine Nyambura, the boy's mother, stole money and took away the child

5. #UhuruChallenge

The hashtag has been trending since Sunday after President Uhuru Kenyatta launched numerous projects during his visit to the Coast region. Some of the projects were criticised as minor initiatives, prompting the hashtag UhuruChallenge to be initiated.

Social media users pushed the trend by sharing images of themselves 'commissioning' all kind of items including slippers, lotions, basins, among others.

6. KCPE

The topic became a subject of online conversation after KNUT Secretary Wilson Sossion called for the cancellation of the 2016 KCSE results claiming that the correct procedure was not adhered to during marking and releasing them.
