The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has sued a patient after she reportedly refused to undergo treatment at the facility.
KNH's board filed a case at the High Court on Friday, in an effort to compel a pregnant woman to follow its doctor's advice and get treatment due to her delicate situation.
In the rare case, Justice Mumbi Ngugi gave orders that the expectant patient presents herself to the hospital terming the matter as urgent.
Through its lawyer Momanyi Nyasimi, the referral hospital stated that the patient refused to be treated despite being diagnosed with severe anaemia, cardiac ailment and hypertension.
The hospital's management added that the complications would affect her unborn twins and that the woman had frustrated their efforts to assist her.
The patient was reportedly diagnosed with the illnesses and was referred to the national hospital for special treatment, but had connived with her relatives to boycott treatment.
Cases of patients suing medical practitioners have been rampant but the opposite is almost unheard of in Kenya.
Last month, Justice Ngugi made a determination in a case where two Tuberculosis patients had been jailed for refusing to take medicines.
The court ruled that the two had been detained illegally and that the move was unlawful, unconstitutional and a violation of their fundamental human rights to movement, dignity and security.
