Senior State House official Dennis Itumbi has revealed that President William Ruto was among the government officials who contributed to the funeral arrangements of comedian Zakaria Kariuki, commonly known as KK Mwenyewe.
In a statement on his official X account, Itumbi stated that the Head of State contributed Ksh1 million, while Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika contributed Ksh200,000.
Furthermore, Itumbi noted that other leaders, including Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung'wah and Lari Member of Parliament Mburu Kahangara, also made contributions.
Itumbi confirmed the donations as he joined other content creators for a candlelighting event on Monday, July 21, to remember the renowned comedian, who he said left a significant void in the nation's comedy scene.
"Thank you, President, for contributing Shs. 1M to assist in the funeral arrangements. Thank you also MP Kimani Ichungwah I appreciate you too. Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, too, for her 200k contribution. Local MP, Mburu Kahangara asante pia. Rest well, Ndugu," Itumbi said.
"KK, go make them laugh even harder in heaven. We lit a candle with the creators community to honour your light. But one big question remains: What happens to monetisation after passing on? We need a way to assign a next of kin. We will push that," Itumbi added.
The comedian, who rose to fame for imitating former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, passed away on Monday, July 14, at the Kiambu Level 5 Hospital after a short illness.
"We are heartbroken to announce the sudden demise of Zakaria Kariuki, AKA Mr Kk Mwenyewe. He passed away yesterday evening while undergoing medical attention at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital," comedian Kafengo wrote on Facebook.
"During these sad moments, we ask for support and prayers. To the family and friends, may God give us strength at this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace," he added.
Kariuki's humorous depictions of the former DP had garnered him 1.1 million followers on TikTok and 412,000 more on Facebook.
In his condolence message on Tuesday, July 15, the former DP acknowledged the comedian for his excellent contribution to the country's comedy ecosystem.
According to Gachagua, who is currently on a two-month trip to the United States, the comedian's simple humour managed to resonate with Kenyans from all walks of life.
“I have this morning woken up to the sad demise of Mr. Zachariah Kariuki alias Mr. KK Mwenyewe, a content creator per excellence and inspiration to many,” Gachagua stated.
“Mr. KK, a young, consistent, and resilient young man, used comedy to communicate simple and creative messages to all Kenyans and spoke to our hearts,” he added.
