The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has fired 12 of its doctors among them officials of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU).
The medical practitioners are said to have been issued with their dismissal letters on Wednesday morning, barely a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that there would be consequences after the doctors rejected a 50 percent pay rise and a Sh600 million increase in allowances offered by the government.
Confirming the dismissal, KNH Chief Executive Officer Lily Koros noted the striking doctors were sacked for desertion adding that the medics had been discouraged against striking.
The hospital further ordered all registrars and medical interns to resume work immediately or be evicted from the staff quarters.
The said sacking forced the KMPDU officials to convene a meeting to deliberate on the way forward following the withdraw of the Sh14.5 Billion offer the government had given in an attempt to end their 94-day strike.
At the same time, Council of Governors chairman Peter Munya gave a go ahead for the counties to sack all doctors who had not resumed work as ordered.
Speaking during the Fourth Annual Devolution Conference in Naivasha on Wednesday, Munya stated that from now henceforth, doctors who were still on strike should consider themselves jobless.
He added that the government would hire new medics from Tanzania and Cuba in the next three weeks.
