KU Student Steals Sh500,000 Using Boinnet's Name

A Kenyatta University Student on Wednesday appeared in court for impersonating Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Ndegwa Muhoro on Facebook.

The student is said to have opened a fake Facebook account with the aim of swindling money from the public.

John Cheboiwa is alleged to have received over Sh500,000 from unsuspecting civilians by pretending that he could help them solve problems.

The court heard that the accused opened the fake account on December 31, 2015, through which he obtained Sh100,750 from one James Mureithi.

Court documents indicate that he lied to Mureithi, claiming he would assist him to get details on his father's estate from the Lands Ministry.

The student faced a second count of defrauding Sh425,000 from Daniel Odero by pretending he could fast-track claims of his brother who died in the line of duty.

Cheboiwa denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Charity Oluoch and was freed on a Sh600,000 bond or Sh330,000 cash bail for all the counts.
