Laikipia West OCPD Mbelengo Mohare was on Tuesday evening shot in the chest during a fierce exchange with illegal grazers at Kifuko ranch, Laikipia County.
Mr Mbelengo was leading security officers in driving away pastoralists who had invaded the ranch before they opened fire to scare the police away.
The OCPD was rushed to Nyahururu hospital and was on Wednesday airlifted to Nairobi hospital for specialised treatment.
Speaking on the incident, area county commissioner Onesmus Musyoki divulged that the operation was still ongoing.
"Officers are still on the ground and we will update you once we can confirm that the situation has been stabilised," Mr Musyoki stated.
Over the past one month, pastoralists have been invading private farms and conservancies in Laikipia County.
