A newly constructed classroom worth Sh1.2 Million was on Saturday destroyed after an enraged driver reportedly rammed it with a lorry in Kitale, Trans Nzoia county.
The unidentified man is alleged to have been involved in a heated argument with his father in Kitale town before he sped off with the family truck.
Upon reaching St Joseph Primary School, the lorry is said to have lost control bringing down the building that was completed a month ago and was set to be unveiled at the beginning of the 2017 academic year.
According to witnesses, the driver was driving towards his home in Wamuini village and had been over speeding when he lost control of the vehicle.
“The man was driving speedily when the lorry rammed into the school and destroyed the classroom,” one of them stated.
After the accident, the suspect then hurriedly drove off to avoid being accosted by members of the public but left the vehicle's registrations plates stuck on the classroom wall.
Confirming the incident, County Commander Lillian Okembo assured that they were investigating the matter and were looking for the owner of the lorry.
“We secured the registration number of the lorry which caused the damage and we are looking for the lorry and its owner,” she affirmed.
The fully-furnished building which was set to accommodate close to 40 pupils is said to have been funded by Saboti Constituency Development Fund.
