Maina Njenga Gets Reprieve After Tribunal Directs Jubilee to Extend His Deadline by 14 Days

Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga on Thursday got the first-round win in a case where he has sued the Jubilee Party and its leaders for refusing to accept his nomination papers for the Laikipia Senatorial race.

The Political Parties’ Disputes tribunal extended the deadline for submission of nomination papers by two weeks and ordered the Jubilee Party to appear on Tuesday.

The Jubilee Party had set Friday as the deadline for submission of nomination documents for aspirants who wish to vie in the August 8 polls on its ticket.

However, as per the ruling, the party will close submission for all other seats with the exception of the Laikipia Senate race.

“We direct that the deadline for the submission of nomination papers only for the Laikipia Senator Position be extended by 14 days. Jubilee should respond for a hearing and further directions next Tuesday,” the tribunal ruled.

Through lawyer Evans Ondieki, Njenga has sought orders compelling Jubilee to accept his nomination papers unconditionally given that he had already paid Sh250,000 as requisite fees, in addition to getting all the necessary clearance certificates as per the law.

The former Mungiki leader also claimed to have spent Sh100 Million for Jubilee campaigns.

Njenga was turned away from the Jubilee Party headquarters in what officials claimed to be, “instructions from above”.

“The decision to reject my nomination papers on account of instructions from the party leader and his deputy is dictatorial, unreasonable and unjustified in an open and just democratic society, having accepted my registration and nomination fee,” Njenga stated in his affidavit.
