A family in Kirwara, Kirinyaga County, is going through intense grief after an elderly man together with his three first-born grandchildren were hit by a speeding vehicle along Makutano-Embu road killing them on the spot.
Jackson Mbutu, 60, was on Saturday being helped by his young grandchildren to cross the road on his wheelchair, when a speeding pickup truck veered off the road and ran over them.
The three children, two boys and a girl: Brian Kinyanjui (10), Miriam Wambui (9) and Jackson Mbutu Junior (7), were all first-borns to Mr Mbutu's three children who are now left with one child each.
According to the elderly man's son, Nehemiah Mutugi, who is also Mbutu Junior's father, the children always accompanied their grandfather to the market, twice a week, while enjoying a ride on the wheelchair.
On the fateful day, they were on their routine when their lives were suddenly was cut short.
“As a child, my father used to carry me on his tricycle wheelchair and when my son and his cousins were old enough, they too started enjoyed riding on the wheelchair and pushing their grandfather around,” Mutugi told the Standard.
Mwea East OCPD Titus Yoma, told reporters that the spot where the tragic accident occurred has been marked as a black-spot.
Last week, seven people died when a matatu rammed into another, amid a scramble for passengers in Kerugoya.
