Man Digs Own Grave Following Alcohol Addiction

A 25-year-old man from Kieni, Nyeri county dug his own grave in preparation for his death, following failure to control his drinking habit.

The man – Joshua Kariuki, allegedly planned to commit suicide so he could follow his dead brother.

The deceased died five years ago after being hit by a car while drunk.

Perhaps convinced that death was the only way out of his addiction, Kariuki had embarked on the grave digging mission but stopped to go look for a spade, only to go missing.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Kariuki' s brother Jacob Maina disclosed that heavy drinking had taken over Kariuki' life.

His estranged wife left him because of his violent tendencies when drunk, which has also caused a strained relationship with other members of his family.

This is the second time the man has tried to take his own life as family members thwarted his first attempt at suicide a while back.

Kariuki's family has lauded President Uhuru Kenyatta's directive for a countrywide crackdown on illicit alcohol, citing that the move could save addicts such as Kariuki.

The family continues searching for their disappeared relative.
