First Lady Margaret Kenyatta on Saturday cancelled the annual marathon dubbed First Lady's Half Marathon following the heated political scene in the country.
In a press statement, Ms Kenyatta stated that she was looking forward to the 2017 marathon but she had been forced to postpone it.
"I was preparing to celebrate with Kenyans to say thank you for running with me and for supporting Beyond Zero. You have all made a huge difference to the lives of thousands of women, men and children, in our great nation," she said.
The First Lady continued: "I have never been willing to politicise this agenda. As a consequence I feel it necessary to cancel the First Lady's Half Marathon this year."
She affirmed her committmenet to end maternal and child mortality across the country.
"I remain committed to and will not deviate from my ultimate goal, which is the betterment of maternal healthcare in this country, and, to build the Beyond Zero Referral Hospital," Ms Kenyatta mentioned.
The marathon was scheduled for March 12, but Kenyans have been asking that it be cancelled and that she addresses the ongoing health crisis.
