The Republic of Angola has honoured the late Jomo Kenyatta, the first President of Kenya, with a posthumous national award to recognise his legacy as a Pan-Africanist leader.

The decoration, awarded under the Honour Class, was presented during Angola’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations held on Thursday, November 6, 2025, in Luanda.

The award was presented by Angola's President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço and was received by Muhoho Kenyatta, who represented the Kenyatta family.

“This prestigious award serves as a powerful reminder of the Pan-African ideals that Mzee Jomo Kenyatta championed, a vision of a united, free, and self-determined Africa," Muhoho Kenyatta said during the ceremony.

"His solidarity with Angola’s liberation movement was rooted in the unwavering belief that the destiny of all African nations is interconnected,” he added.

A posthumous national award is an honour given to an individual who has passed away, typically in recognition of their outstanding contributions to a nation.

The award is usually presented to the deceased's family at a ceremony and recognises the deceased's legacy and achievements.

While confirming the award in a statement on Saturday, November 8, former President Uhuru Kenyatta noted that the award honours the deep historical ties and shared struggle for freedom between Kenya and Angola.

Kenyatta further affirmed that the award will be fundamental in reinforcing the already vibrant diplomatic ties between the two countries.

"This recognition, which also included other key African figures, strengthens the fraternal ties between the two nations and celebrates a common history of overcoming colonialism," Uhuru Kenyatta said.

"The Office of the Fourth President of Kenya extends its warmest congratulations to the people of Angola on their Golden Jubilee and wishes them continued peace and prosperity in their journey of national development," he added.

During the ceremony, other key African leaders and figures from countries including Algeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Ghana were also honoured with the award.
