Mathew Lempurkel to be Charged with Murder of British Ex-soldier Tristan Voorspuy

Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel who was arrested on Tuesday will face murder charges.

The Prosecution on Wednesday indicated that Mr Lempurkel would be charged with the murder of British ex-soldier Tristan Voorspuy who was shot dead on Saturday in Laikipia County.

Lempurkel appeared before a Nanyuki court on Wednesday afternoon after earlier proceedings were interrupted by rowdy supporters who demanded his release.

He was taken back to the cells after it was also established that the presiding judge was not available to hear the case.

During the afternoon session, police requested that the MP be detained for 14 days as they prepare the murder charge case.

His lawyer, Siaya Senator James Orengo, protested the decision of changing the charge claiming that he was duped the MP would face incitement charges. The MP was however released on a Sh200,000 bond as investigations continue.

He is required to report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations three times a week.

The controversial lawmaker was apprehended on Tuesday on allegations of having links to the recent invasions of private property in the County leading to violent attacks in the area - with the latest incident leading to Voorspuy's death.
