Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Tuesday warned school principals against hiking school fees as KCPE candidates prepare to join Form One in January 2017.
While announcing the Form One selection results at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in Nairobi, Matiang'i requested parents to report school principals who will demand more money than the standard package set out by the government.
“If any parent pays a shilling more in school fees, then the Principal should be reported,” Matiang'i stated.
The Education CS announced that all candidates who had scored 400 marks and above had been selected to join National schools across the country.
Dr Matiang’i said admission letters would be posted on the Education ministry website, www.education.go.ke.
The candidates can, however, check the schools they have been selected to join by sending an SMS with their index number to 20042 from any network.
In March 2015, the government gazetted regulations that set boarding school fees at Sh53,554 per year, day schools at Sh9,374 per year and Sh37,210 annually for special schools.
Matiang'i's warning comes after it emerged some school principals had devised clever ways to increase school fees thus flouting government regulations.
Some of the dubious ways Kenyans.co.ke established include:
1. Some schools have been publishing fee structures for one term as opposed to the whole year, which is the requirement by the government.
2. Other schools publish the recommended fees as required by the government but issue separate documents with additional money the parents are supposed to cater for.
3. Some schools still demand money for mock examinations despite the government having banned the exams.
4. Other schools have been demanding parents to pay for school activities, lunch levies and school uniforms which were outlawed by the government.
