Media Houses to Lose Broadcasting Licenses Over Bias Reporting, Communication Authority of Kenya Warns

Media houses risk losing their broadcasting licenses in this electioneering period following tough orders issued by the Communication Authority of Kenya

Addressing journalists during a press conference on Thursday, CA officials warned media outlets against bias reporting as the country is fast approaching the General Election.

The Authority stated that aspiring politicians ought to be given equal opportunities in their broadcasting.

"The Programming Code obligates radio & television broadcasters to give equitable coverage to registered political parties in an election. The broadcasters are expected to abide by the provisions of the Code in relation to election period and political parties.

"News during the election period shall not be treated to deliberately give some candidates undue advantage over their competitor,” the statement read in part.

Broadcasters were also warned against airing inflammatory statements made by politicians.

“Broadcasters to ensure political messages don't attack individuals, ethnicity, families, race, religion or their associations,” CA officials said.

The media houses were further cautioned against reporting misleading information. They were also told not to use technological manipulations to doctor pictures of political rallies to enlarge or diminish crowds.
