Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho Graduates from Gretsa University in Thika

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has sparked concern after he skipped his graduation at Gretsa University in Thika on Wednesday.

The flamboyant Governor, who did not attend the event, graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce -  Second Class honours, Lower Division.

Despite his active nature on social media, the Mombasa Governor did not speak a word on the event raising concern among social media users.

According to an official from Gretsa University,  Joho had not communicated that he would miss the graduation ceremony.

The Governor joined Gretsa in 2014 under the Distance Learning Programme.

More than 1,000 students graduated in various degree, diploma and certificate courses.

The Governor's earlier degree in Business Administration from Kampala University sparked controversy and was declared invalid by the Uganda National Council of Higher Education (NHCE) in 2014.

A report by NCHE indicated that there was no clear evidence that academic due process was followed from admission to graduation regarding a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (Human Resource Management option) awarded to Mr Joho by Kampala University.

NCHE also noted that Mr Joho may not have been in Uganda to physically undertake studies, raising doubts about how the university awarded him the degree.

This controversy provided grounds for his political rivals to challenge his academic qualifications in court considering a Governor is required to atleast have a degree.

Nonetheless, Joho has consistently maintained that his degree from Kampala University is genuine.
