Ford Kenya party on Sunday announced that their party leader who is also a National Super Alliance (NASA) Co-Principal Moses Wetangula, would seek re-election for Bungoma Senatorial seat in the August elections.
Ford-Kenya Bungoma Secretary Mr Peter Wakhuleka while addressing the press stated that his party leader would defend his seat since he was irreplaceable.
The Secretary further noted that all the paperwork had been completed and was only awaiting submission to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
"It is a sealed deal. We are going to present his name to the IEBC as an unopposed candidate," he stated.
The announcement calms down speculations on the political future of Wetangula since many people had argued on whether he would defend his seat or wait for the Deputy Premier Cabinet Secretary position he had been promised in the event NASA form Government after winning the August elections.
Political analyst Isaac Wanjekeche while speaking to a local daily stated that the announcement indicated Wetang'ula was not sure of a NASA win and feared fading into political oblivion.
"Wetang'ula doesn’t want to corner himself in the political situation Raila and Kalonzo have found themselves in the past, hence the need to devise a fallback strategy in an event of loss in August," he explained.
Wetangula will now face off with veteran journalist David Makali of the Amani National Congress (ANC), Bonny Nyongesa of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Juma Mukhwana of Jubilee in the August elections.
Last month, NASA unveiled its team that would see ODM Party leader Raila Odinga become flag bearer with Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka as his running mate.
ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi would be Premier Cabinet Secretary, Wetangula the Deputy Premier in charge of the public sector and Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto would be Deputy Premier in charge of Social services.
