Most nine year old children are sheltered by their parents who seek to protect them from dangers that lurk outside home.
As one nine year old girl from Nairobi's Kayole estate would come to learn, sometimes the danger is right inside the home.
Although she is lucky to have escaped with her life, the nine year old has both physical and emotional wounds that will serve as a reminder of her own mother having turned on her.
The girl allegedly lost track of time while playing with her friends outside and when she got home, her mother stabbed her with a knife.
Neighbors answered to the unending screams from the child and rescued her from her mother.
She had sustained wounds on her legs and back.
The child was taken to a childrens's home in the area as her mother was taken into police custody awaiting to be charged in court for the inhumane act.
Residents say that this is not the first time that the woman has caused harm to her daughter, alleging that she has in the past, abandoned her without food for a week.
