MP Angered by 'Kibaki'

Othaya Member of Parliament Mary Wambui on Thursday expressed her displeasure with a fellow lawmaker's move to refer to her by the name 'Wambui Kibaki'.

While contributing to the Political Parties (Amendment) Bill which had proposed a Special Election Fund to support women candidates to vie for the polls,  Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa asserted that there were "rich women" who didn't need a special kitty to vie in elections, citing "Wambui Kibaki" as one of the wealth women.

That reference seemed to  have displeased the Othaya lawmaker,  who is a quick rejoinder rose on a point of order demanding the name Kibaki be withdrawn from the Hansard.

Ms Wambui went ahead to express in the house that she is “a saved Christian and an active member of the PCEA church,” even quoting the scripture to emphasize that she is a hard worker.

“I have worked hard to get where I am today,” Wambui said.

The brief clash between the two lawmakers caused the Assembly to burst in laughter, with Mr Wamalwa defending himself that he meant that Ms Wambui is heading a constituency where Mwai Kibaki is the former MP and not that she is related to the retired President.

In 2009, the retired President dismissed widely publicized reports that Ms Wambui was his second wife, stating that reports about a second wife and second family were "lies".

"I want to state something that I wanted you to hold dear and permanently in your hearts. You know and I know and everybody else knows that I am married and I have only one wife. Everyone in Kenya knows it. But the media keeps repeating about my having another wife or wives. I want to make it very clear that I have only one dear wife Lucy, and I do not have any other. And anybody who knows me and knows my family and knows how I live will know that I have only one wife. And they do not expect any diversion from the reality of life by people telling lies," said Kibaki in news conference in 2009.
