MP Punished After Rebellion

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has made good its threats that it would punish members who had previously expressed intent in working with the government.

On Tuesday morning, the coalition removed the name of Lunga Lunga Member of Parliament (MP) Khatib Mwashetani from the House Business Committee (HBC).

According to an order paper outlining schedule of business in the National Assembly, Mwashetani was replaced by Mombasa Women Representative Mishi Juma.

The Coalition is said to have omitted Mwashetani in a list of its representatives to the HBC, which was set to be voted on by legislators later on Tuesday afternoon.

Attempts by Kenyans.co.ke to reach the Legislator for a comment on the matter were futile as calls to him went unanswered.

The House Business Committee comprises of not more than 29 members nominated by parliamentary parties and approved by the House at the commencement of every Session.

It is charged with among other responsibities: preparing, scheduling and implementing National Assembly programmes and is chaired by the House Speaker.

Last week, the coalition had threatened to take action against several MPs from the Coast region accused of jumping ship and working with the government.

The lawmakers had previously declared that they would work with the ruling coalition as a way of enhancing development for their constituents.

Early this year, MP Mwashetani was among five other MPs who shifted allegiance from the Opposition to the ruling coalition.

Other legislators who also promised to defect were: Kilifi North lawmaker Gideon Mung'aro, Peter Shehe of Ganze, Salim Mustafa of Kilifi South and James Kamoti of Rabai constituency.
