MPs Set to Discuss President Uhuru Kenyatta's Request for Supplementary Budget

Kiharu Member of Parliament (MP) Irungu Kang'ata has established a link between the current high food prices and the free money generously dished out by politicians during political campaign rallies.

The lawyer claims that the soaring inflation rate is partly due to the scarcity of commodities but also caused by the heightened demand for the commodities as campaign monies have increased the ability of members of the public to purchase goods.

"It is true there is inflation partly due to demand and supply issues. On the demand side, during campaigns there is usually heightened money circulation which creates huge demand hence increase in prices," he told journalists.

He added that the drought was also a key reason behind the supply difficulty and the Jubilee administration was not to blame.

The comments come as parliament is set to debate and possibly approve President UhuruKenyatta's recommended Supplementary Budget this afternoon.

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, who is affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), on his part claims that the supplementary budget had come too late and could be a scheme by the government to create the impression that it's was doing something.

"The introduction of the supplementary budget cannot work because the revenue base of the country is too weak to support it," the MP observed.
