Mwai Kibaki's Former Bodyguard Sues Police After Being Sacked

A General Service Unit (GSU) officer has sued the police department for firing him for allegedly being too close to former President Mwai Kibaki.

David Wambugu, a former bodyguard to Mr Kibaki, accused a senior police officer of having pushed him out of the Force after he had his medical expenses catered for by the retired president.

According to the complainant, he was involved in a terrible accident when accompanying the former President during the 2002 Presidential campaigns in Machakos County.

The former GSU officer claimed that after the accident, he was admitted to Nairobi Hospital for an unspecified duration.

In his court papers, he explained that upon becoming President, Kibaki decided to cater for his medical expenses and paid his bill which seemingly angered his senior identified as King'ori Mwangi.

“Due to the close relationship and trust that the former President had in the petitioner, he offered to personally settle the medical bills of the petitioner through a State House account known as State House recurrent account. This was a personal commitment from the former president and so this means that the petitioner had direct contact with him,” read the court papers.

Wambugu stated that he was accused of trying to extort money from State House without following protocol and was threatened with his life in order to take an early retirement.

“The first (National Police Service Commission) and second (Mwangi) respondents did not give reasons for forced early retirement of the petitioner. The petitioner was presented with an early retirement letter contrary to his wishes and in breach of his human rights,” he added.

The former bodyguard who filed the case at the Employment and Labour Relations Court also enjoined the National Police Service and the Attorney General.

Mwangi, however, defended himself noting that the complainant was dismissed for losing his firearm under mysterious circumstances.
