Nairobi-Mombasa Highway to be Closed on Wednesday

The Standard Gauge Railway developer, China Road and Bridge Corporation, has announced the closure of Nairobi - Mombasa Highway on Wednesday at Taru near Athi River.

According to a newspaper notice published on Monday, the closure is to facilitate the erection of Standard Gauge railway overpass.

The road will be closed from 6am to 6pm hence, motorists will be diverted to prevent a traffic snarl up that is expected considering the busy nature of the highway.

“The traffic will be diverted to a well-maintained service road to mitigate against a gridlock. Police will be deployed to ensure law and order during the operation,”read part of the notice from China Road

The SGR is a flagship project under the Kenya Vision 2030 development agenda. The infrastructural development is expected to simplify transport operations across the borders and reduce travel costs, besides benefiting the economies of Kenya and her neighbours.

Construction of the 609km-long railway line began in October 2013 and the first phase is scheduled to be completed by June 2017.
