A majority of Gen Zs or young Kenyans preferred not living in Kenya or Africa, a report by Africa Uncensored revealed.
The report titled Fame, Fortune and Freedom; Decoding the Shape of the dream for Kenya’s Gen Z indicated that 84 per cent of Gen Zs would have been open to ditching Kenya for another country, only 16 per cent expressed a preference for continuing living in the country.
Nearly 80 per cent of the respondents said that they preferred moving to America followed by slightly over 60 per cent who chose Europe, Australia (37 per cent), another part of Africa (34 per cent), another country in East Africa (20 per cent), and Asia (18 per cent).
The 1,300 Gen Zs had been asked if they wished to leave Kenya for better opportunities and where they wanted to go to.
The report further showed that a majority of Gen Z preferred starting their own businesses aided by the internet than working on the farm.
22 per cent of the respondents revealed that being self-employed was the ultimate goal followed by 12 per cent who preferred working as influencers, doctors (12 per cent), office jobs(10 per cent), engineers (9 per cent and musicians (8 per cent).
Farming ranked lower at less than 5 per cent of the respondents alongside online writers, watchmen, boda boda riders and uber drivers.
The respondents further indicated that they prioritise money offered when looking for a job followed by mental health in the job, good vibe, company reputation and remote work.
In terms of morality in the process of making money, 34 per cent revealed that they believed people can make money morally while 23 per cent responded that making money was important regardless of how it was done.
19 per cent revealed that they do not judge individuals making money illegally but they would not do it while less than 10 per cent believed that giving bribes is unavoidable in wealth making.
"The survey polled 1300 young people aged between 18 and 27 across Kenya. Now to the questions: 78% of the gen-z respondents polled say they want to be famous," John Allan Namu, the founder of Africa Uncensored, revealed.
