The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) has warned Nairobians of a major water shortage starting from January 1 to April 2017.
In a press conference, Managing Director Philip Gichuki stated that this was due to failed rains in December. He added that as a result, Ndakaini Dam, which supplies most of Nairobi tap water, was left at only 48 per cent full.
Mr Gichuki further divulged that water production in Nairobi will be reduced by 16 percent in a bid to maintain water supply in the Capital up to April.
"In view of the foregoing it has become necessary for NCWSC to reduce water production by 16 percent effective 1st January 2017. This will enable the company to ration the available water in the reservoirs in order to sustain water supply to the City up to mid April 2017 when the long rains are expected," the statement read in part.
He pleaded with resident to co-operate with the company during the water shortage period by reducing the water consumption for non-essential use like car washing and watering of flowers.
"Those who wash their cars on daily basis should reduce to once a week and cleaning of homes should also be reduced, irrigating lawns should be stopped if they use tap water," Gichuki said.
