Nation Media Journalist Suspended After Criticising Uhuru

Special Projects Editor at Nation Media Group has been suspended for publishing an editorial that criticised President Uhuru Kenyatta and the government.

Denis Galava, was asked to go on leave for the company to review circumstances under which he published the article without following editorial procedure.

In a statement issued to staff by the Editor-in-chief Tom Mshindi, the Journalist was accused of filing the editorial without consultating his seniors.

"The lack of consultation and review of the editorial on the material day, where one writer takes a strong position on such an important issue single-handedly without broad discussion and consultation, is a significant departure from established procedure," read the statement.

According to the company, such an article expressing strong views had to be discussed by senior editors before being published, a process which Galava allegedly ignored.

"The purpose of this process of review and consultation is not so that the content is changed or censored. It is to prepare the leadership of the company to deal with the consequences, if any, of that publication," added Mshindi in the statement.

The article in question - Mr President, get your act together this year - was published on the January 2, 2016, Saturday Nation edition.

The editorial took issue with the government, claiming that the pillars of nationhood had collapsed and seriously weakened beyond repair.

“Mr President, these half-measures are harming the presidency and your authority as the First Citizen of Kenya besides tormenting Kenyans. Among other challenges, it creates an impression of a reluctant leader, one who enjoys the trappings of office but is not ready to get the work done,” it read in part.

"Instead of providing this leadership, you and your lieutenants — the Deputy President, The Cabinet, MPs and Senators — have adopted a default campaign mode of regaling the public with tales of largess to come," it continued.
