New Deadline and Rules by IEBC Could Lock out Independent Candidates Who Lost in Party Primaries

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has changed the deadline for independent candidates to fully submit their applications ahead of the August elections.

According to a communication by IEBC, applicants have until May 4 to submit duly filled application forms to the commission's headquarters.

Aspirants will also have to withdraw their membership from political parties before being cleared to participate in the exercise.

The next few days could see more aspirants disgruntled with the nominations resign from their parties in a rush to meet the IEBC deadline.

As the dust settles on the hotly-contested party primaries, a record number of independent candidates continue to flock offices of the IEBC and Registrar of Political parties seeking clearance to contest in the polls.

Some politicians who lost in the nominations including Paul Otuoma (ODM) Peter Kenneth (Jubilee), Bundotich Zedekiah Kiprop aka Buzeki (Jubilee) have indicated that they could vie as independent candidates after failing to clinch tickets in their respective parties.

This announcement comes as different parties continue to hear complaints from aspirants disgruntled with the exercise.

An aspirant will also submit his/her symbol both in hard copy and in soft copy to IEBC by May 8. Each symbol will be verified to ensure that it does not resemble that of other aspirants and the approval of symbols will be done by May 10.

The party primaries saw a number of seasoned politicians floored by newcomers and a record number of aspirants vowing to proceed as independent candidates.

Below is the Public Notice by IEBC.
