NIS Alerts Uhuru on New Al Shabaab Tactics

The National Intelligence Service has brought to the attention of President Uhuru Kenyatta new tactics the Al Shabaab terror group has adopted in recruiting its militants, the Standard reports.

It is reportedly in the President's knowledge, that Al Shabaab have shifted their areas of recruitment to Rift Valley, Western and Nyanza regions.

The President has further been advised that precautionary security measures ought to be taken now that most schools are closed for April holidays, to ensure that any possible threats are identified and defeated.

This comes after successful efforts by the government to curb the radicalisation and spread of religious propaganda by the group in areas such as Mombasa, Nairobi - especially in Majengo and Eastleigh - as well as the North Eastern region which were seen as “potent recruitment grounds” for the terror group.

The government has continually enhanced its intelligence collection and sharing, both locally and internationally, and also sustained security and vigilance across the country.

Reports also indicate that Kenya's security agencies have recently foiled several impending attacks orchestrated by the militia group.

Al Shabaab has in the past claimed responsibility for deadly attacks in the country including: the Westgate Mall in Nairobi that left 67 people dead and Garissa University College where 148 lives were lost with the most being that of students.
