NTV Cameraman Bill Otieno Assaulted by GSU Officers Near Voi

An NTV photojournalist was on Thursday reportedly beaten up by General Service Unit (GSU) officers when covering protests.

Bill Otieno, a cameraman, claimed that he was accosted by the officers who assaulted him along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, near Voi, despite identifying himself as a journalist.

According to Otieno, the officers rained kicks and blows on him demanding to know why he had filmed them during the protests.

He narrated that they then forced him to board their vehicle before taking away his memory card.

“The GSU officers forced me to board their vehicle which drove towards Nairobi but dropped me at Ndii area after confiscating my memory card,” the journalist recalled.

He affirmed that he would later file a report at the Voi Police Station noting that he was not seriously injured in the incident.

Commenting on the matter, Voi police boss Joseph Chesire urged Otieno to report the incident for investigations to be done.

“I was busy on the other side trying to calm the situation. I request the journalist to report the matter to us for investigations to start,” he said.
