Nyeri MCAs Award Themselves Sh180 Million

Nyeri County Government is on the spot following a move by the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to allocate themselves Sh180 Million annually as development funds.

The initiative has sparked reactions from residents, who claim that the money had political strings attached to it and may never get to them on the grassroots level.

“The timing of this ward development fund is political and it is obvious that MCA's are going to use this as a tool for campaign come 2016,” said Kihara Njau a resident of Endarasha Ward.

However, according to the MCAs they proposed to allocate Sh180 Million to 30 wards annually in a plan to initiate development projects in the county. With each ward getting Sh6 Million each, the MCA's will foresee the initiatives and ensure its completion.

The County lawmakers maintain that, the fund is going to be used to solve problems in the local community, and facilitate capacity building among the youth.

“The things which the county government might disregard as petty issues, are major issues among the people therefore the fund is set aside for such,” he stated.

Nyeri Governor, Nderitu Gachagua agreeably said that he would accent to the proposal as long as it conformed to the guidelines set by the Controller of Budget.

County governments have been under keen scrutiny from the public, after several governments across the country were accused of misusing funds in the name of development.

The Senate is currently in the process of probing Kajiado County Executives over the allocation of millions to buy mobile phones.
