Newly sworn in Nyeri Governor Samuel Wamathai has clashed with the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) just hours after he took office.
The MCAs on Tuesday vowed to reject Wamathai's nominees for the county executive positions who are meant to be vetted by the ward representatives.
After the Monday swearing-in ceremony, Wamathai announced that he would nominate the same executives who served in former governor Nderitu Gachagua's cabinet.
They would, however, have to be re-evaluated by the MCAs since the county now has a new government.
In a special sitting on Tuesday, the representatives noted that they needed fresh leadership in the county including implementation of new projects which are different from those under Gachagua's tenure.
“We must change the manner in which the county has been operating, and the first step is to seek new leadership in county affairs,” they were quoted by the Standard.
During the session, the MCAs also proposed to scrap a document with past projects which they said the county executives had failed to implement.
At the same time, they warned Gachagua's brother Rigathi Gachagua against interfering with the running of the county.
The MCAs seemed aggrieved by Rigathi who on Monday criticised them for eulogising his brother despite having given him unending trouble during his administration.
“I wish you told him those sweet words when he was ailing and not in a special sitting after his death,” Rigathi told the MCAs according to the Nation.
The ward representative termed Gachagua's brother as an outside accusing him of embezzling county funds.
“This assembly does not take instructions from outsiders. If those instructions were given by the governor then we would consider them,” one of the MCAs maintained.
