ODM Tribunal and National Elections Board Split as Aspirants Seek Justice

As various ODM aspirants continue to receive their verdicts, details are emerging of a fight between the Party's National Elections Board (NEB) and the ODM Appeals Tribunal which is responsible for handling the disputes arising from the primaries.

A member of the ODM Appeals body accused the NEB, which is headed by Judy Pareno, of frustrating the tribunal bringing to focus the tension between the two party organs.

The appeals tribunal headed by Willis Otieno has accused the NEB of ignoring their directive that repeat elections be held after successful petitions by aspirants.

However, the NEB has ignored this directive in a number of cases and issued certificates to disputed winners, a move that did not go well with some members of the appeals board.

A section of aspirants who lost in the nominations commended the appeals tribunal for being fair but accused the NEB of bias and conspiring with party bigwigs to frustrate justice.

The ODM appeals tribunal boss Willis Otieno downplayed news about the split.

Earlier on, the tribunal had threatened to resign fearing for their lives after goons attacked them at Mash Park hotel, disrupting their operations.

The tribunal had recommended that a nomination certificate issued to ODM chairman John Mbadi be revoked. However, the NEB ignored this and issued a certificate to Mbadi.

In Taita Taveta County, the NEB ignored the tribunal's recommendation to repeat the nomination exercise and declared Wundanyi Member of Parliament (MP) Thomas Mwadeghu the winner, a decision that had been challenged by the incumbent John Mruttu.

Many ODM aspirants have proceeded to the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal after accusing the ODM NEB of conspiring with politicians to deny them justice.
