Opposition Leaders Sign Letter of Intent to Form NASA

Four Opposition leaders are said to have appended their signatures to a letter signalling the end of the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD).

The leaders including Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula are said to have signed the “letter of intent” at a private location in Nairobi.

The document is said to have been formalised on Tuesday afternoon to indicate the opposition leaders were ready to officially form the National Super Alliance (NASA) that will consequently lead to the disbandment of CORD.

The document, which clearly outlines the principles to guide the Alliance, will now be deposited with the Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung’u.

According to a report by the Standard, some of the values outlined in the letter of intent include; respect for rule of law, implementation of the Constitution, zero tolerance to corruption, human rights and human dignity.

Other values are economic development grounded on social democracy, integrity and transparency and promotion of national cohesion through comprehensive inclusiveness.

The NASA secretariat stated that the signed document was meant to enhance unity among the opposition leaders as the General Election approaches.

“The principals agreed to form a coalition with guiding values and principles of governance. We don’t want to go to an election as a divided family and so we must prepare a pre-election coalition agreement,” the secretariat was quoted.

On Tuesday, the Party leaders unveiled a joint team that is set to deliberate on a power-sharing structure and also come up with the Coalition's presidential flagbearer.
