Opposition to Release New List of NYS Suspects

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is on Monday set to unveil a new list of people who it says are the main suspects in the National Youth Service scandal.

ODM Chairman John Mbadi disclosed that the Opposition was in possession of evidence linking other entities to the scam, different from those mentioned in previous investigations.

According to Mbadi, they will give names of direct beneficiaries, companies, their directors and a series of banks involved in the alleged loot.

The Chairman, who is also a member of the National Assembly Public Accounts Committee (PAC), stated that most of the people mentioned in the media were used as conduits, assuring that the opposition would reveal the real beneficiaries.

"Most of the people named in the media were just used to steal the money but we will give all the details including why the money was stolen and how it was used,” reports the Star.

The lawmaker specifically pointed at the main suspect, businessman Ben Gethi, whom he said was used to reportedly steal the money with the help of a relative to a top government official.

“Ben Gethi was a conduit used to steal from NYS but we have the documents and have traced the real beneficiaries of the NYS funds. The names are many and point to specific individuals,” he added.

He further complained that some members of PAC, which is investigating the scandal that has now expanded to Sh1.6 Billion, were being bribed and intimidated to go slow on the scandal.

The MP claimed that some committee members were being pressured making it difficult for PAC to compile a comprehensive report regarding the scam.
