Opposition Threatens to Block Uhuru from Vying in 2017 Elections

The Opposition has now threatened to move to court to block President Uhuru Kenyatta from contesting in the upcoming August 8, 2017, elections.

On Sunday, senior counsel and Siaya Senator James Orengo revealed that the opposition was reviewing fresh 'evidence' by former TNA Secretary General Onyango Oloo on the blatant electoral theft that padded Jubilee numbers in the 2013 polls.

“We are reflecting and reviewing what we have so far so as to see if we can make legal appeals on the basis of electoral fraud and misconduct,” said Mr Orengo.

The Siaya Senator observed that under the current laws, it could be impossible to remove the current regime from power on grounds of electoral malpractice in the last polls.

Nonetheless, he noted that the only option was petitioning courts to have those who participated in the alleged malpractice blocked from participating in the coming elections.

Orengo revealed that once they obtain grounds for legal action, the Opposition will seek the intervention of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

They will then use the results from the three agencies to petition the court to take legal action against President Kenyatta and members of his team.

This latest move by the opposition is expected to set the stage for a political showdown over how Jubilee won the 2013 polls.

Mr Oloo reignited the 2013 election row after he sensationally claimed to have secret files proving that CORD leader Raila Odinga won the last polls.

Even so, the President's henchmen led by nominated MP and former TNA chairman Johnson Sakaja have denied the rigging claims by Oloo maintaining that Kenyatta won the election fair and square.
