Panic As School Dormitory Burns Down

38 students are counting themselves lucky, having escaped with their lives following a pandemonium caused by the burning down of a dormitory at St Christopher Mabanga Girls High School in Bungoma County.

Students rushed to save their belongings from the burning dorm resulting in a stampede that ended up risking their lives.

The Tuesday night incident saw 28 girls get admitted at Bungoma County Hospital.

10 others were treated and discharged.

The students were in for evening preps when the fire started, burning property worth millions of shillings as the school's biggest dormitory was razed down.

Preliminary investigations point to an electric fault as the cause of the fire.

Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka and the Red Cross Society team from the area visited the school  Wednesday morning and donated blankets and mattresses to the 198 displaced students as a temporary solution.

In the mean time, stakeholders continue deliberating on the way forward.
