Panic as Nation Media Shuts QTV and Other Stations

A number of Nation Media Group employees are set to lose their jobs as the media house embarks on a restructuring process.

In a statement released on Thursday, NMG announced that it was consolidating its two television stations into one, NTV.

Besides closing down QTV, the giant media house stated that it was also scaling down its traditional radio business in Kenya (Nation FM and QFM ) and Rwanda (KFM).

According to the statement, only one radio station will remain on live signal while the others will only broadcast online.

The media house confirmed that the transition aimed at transforming NMG into a "modern 21st-century digital content company" will result in loss of its workforce through job redundancies.

"We do recognise that today's announcement will be difficult for the affected employees and their families. This exercise will be carried out with due respect to our employees and within the Kenya laws," reads part of the statement.

The media company linked the changes, which take effect as of June 30, to dynamic trends observed in the consumption of its products by individuals.
