PHOTOS: Al Shabaab Journalist Executed by Firing Squad

An Al Shabaab affiliated journalist was on Monday killed by firing squad - a method of execution normally used on captured Al Shabaab operatives in Somalia.

30-year old Hassan Hanafi was tied to a post before the firing squad opened fire on him, after he was sentenced to death in march for being guilty of murdering five of his colleagues.

Journalists at the scene reported that Hanafi was seen struggling as he was being led to the execution site, forcing the officers to tie him up.

Hanafi was arrested in Kenya in 2014 before being extradited to Somalia to face charges.

He had earlier disclosed that he joined Al Shabaab in 2008 while working as a journalist for Radio Andalus, a local Somali broadcaster.

It is reported that Hanafi would call journalists and threaten them with death if they did not join Al Shabaab. A committee that protects journalists in Somalia reported that more than 25 colleagues had been murdered since 2007.

After his sentencing, Hanafi mocked the verdict stating that his death would not change anything.

"But I am indifferent if you kill me. You will see if killings will stop even after my death." He proclaimed.
