PNU Billboards Destroyed in Meru

Billboards belonging to the Party of National Unity (PNU) led by Meru Governor Peter Munya were on Friday night destroyed ahead of President Uhuru Kenyatta's visit to the region.

The two boards are said to have been completely vandalised by unknown attackers.

The incident happened a day after Munya promised to halt campaigns to popularise his party in order to welcome President Kenyatta who is set to tour the region on Saturday for a voter registration campaign.

Police in the area confirmed that the billboards erected at Kathita Bridge and near Nkubu matatu terminal were damaged but assured the matter was under investigation.

Munya has been embroiled in a tussle over the Meru gubernatorial race with Senator Kiraitu Murungi who has vowed to run for the seat on a Jubilee ticket.

The governor, who promised to support Kenyatta's re-election, came under fire for refusing to fold PNU and join the Jubilee Party.

His efforts to popularise PNU in the region have reportedly created a rift in Jubilee, which has further been sparked by disputed election of interim officials which happened a few weeks ago.

“There is a crack in the Jubilee house in Meru and our seniors don’t see that. I am afraid Jubilee will perform dismally if the dissenting voices on the composition of JP officials is not solved,” one of the area MP was quoted.

President Kenyatta's visit is set to solve an emerging rebellion by a section of disgruntled leaders which has threatened popularity of Jubilee in the County.
