Poisonous Snakes Attack Five in Baringo

Five people have been hospitalized in Baringo after being bitten by poisonous snakes.

The four children and an elderly woman, from different parts of the county continue to receive treatment at Kabarnet County Referral Hospital.

The attacks come in the wake of a dry spell that has hit the county, pushing the snakes closer and closer into homes in search of food and water.

Speaking to Citizen News, one of the child survivor's parent- Samuel Kiptoo, said that his child was bitten at night.

Deeply asleep, she did not realize what had happened until the next morning when she woke up with a swollen leg and the family rushed her to hospital.

Some of the residents in the area have taken to killing the snakes and taking them to hospitals to help doctors identify the venom and hence get the antidote faster.

Medical officers have however raised concerns over rudimentary methods of first aid such as tying the area above the bite to prevent the venom from moving in the blood circulation system.

They have warned that such acts end up putting the victims' lives in more danger as they prevent flow of blood to the area and could necessitate amputation of the leg or arm once in hospital.

The best thing to do in case of a snake bite is to try and keep the victim calm as a relaxed heart beat slows down the spread of venom and seek medical help as fast as possible.

It also helps to catch details of the snake such as size, color etc as it may help the doctors identify it and hence the antidote.
