VIDEO: CORD Supporters Teargassed After Madaraka Rally

Police were on Wednesday forced to use teargas to disperse supporters of the Coalition for Reforms and Development (CORD) after the end of the opposition's rally at Uhuru Park.

The supporters started marching along Uhuru Highway blocking entry into the Central Business District, prompting the police to lob teargas canisters to clear the busy highway.

Other reports indicate that some of the supporters started looting from the business along Uhuru Highway, hence, police had to contain the situation.

A large contingent of police officers was deployed to man the rally which was organized parallel to the national Madaraka Day celebration at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.

On Tuesday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said that the government would provide security during the rally.

Early on Wednesday, police officers who were deployed at Uhuru Park were forced to abandon frisking the supporters who turned up in large numbers.

During the rally, CORD leader Raila Odinga said that  the coalition would not be cowed by police brutality towards its supporters.
