Political Parties Sign Deal to Nominate 30 Percent Women

The Jubilee Party and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have signed an agreement to have 30 per cent of their candidates in the August 8 General Election being women.

The deal, which was also signed by 20 other political parties, provides that they will have to nominate women in the upcoming nominations to ensure the percentage is met.

This will be in an attempt to give women a higher chance of being elected in various positions to meet the two-third majority rule representation stipulated in the Constitution.

The move came after the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) cautioned that Parliament risked being unconstitutional if it failed to meet the threshold provided for by the law.

Women leaders have been calling for the election of more females even as the country continues to grapple with the headache of implementing the rule.

Last week, the leaders held a historic event dubbed Ni Mama at the Bomas of Kenya which brought together over 4000 women from across the country.

During the conference graced by among others Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua, the leaders encouraged the attendees to support women who will be seeking elective posts in the August polls.

Implementation of the gender rule has on numerous occasions received a setback after being shot down by both the National Assembly and the Senate despite sustained calls for the House to pass the law.
