President Kenyatta Speaks on 2016 KCSE Results from State House Mombasa

President Uhuru Kenyatta has issued a message of encouragement to candidates who sat for 2016 KCSE examination that recorded a major drop in performance compared to previous years.

In a statement from State House Mombasa, President Kenyatta assured the candidates that whatever results they got, “there was still hope and possibility to make it to their career of choice”.

The Head of State maintained that despite the huge drop in performance, the final results and the whole marking process was credible.

“Although there was a significant drop in the performance in this year’s KCSE examinations, compared to the previous year, the results by and large posted a normal performance curve – a clear indication are that the examinations marking and final results are credible,” Kenyatta stated.

Of the over 500,000 students who sat the exam, only 141 had straight As –  a 94 percent decline from the previous year when 2,685 students scored an A in 2015. 88,929 candidates scored between A and C+.

Students who scored A- also reduced to 4,645 from 12,069 in 2015 while those who scored B+ reduced by 50 percent to 10,972 from 21,927.

Those with Grade B-plain declined to 17,216 from 33,460.

On the other hand, the number of grade Ds and Es increased significantly this year compared to last year.

The number of Es rose from 5,350 in 2015 to 33,399 in 2016, while 149,929 students scored a D- up from 48,658.

Those who scored D-plain were 112,135, compared to 79,555 in 2015, while those who scored C- were 61,026, C-Plain were 44,792 and those with a C+ mean score were 32,207.
