President Uhuru Kenyatta Congratulates Moussa Mahamat and Amina Mohamed After AU Commission Elections

President Uhuru Kenyatta has congratulated Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed for a well-fought battle, thanking her for her strong showing.

Kenyatta noted that Mohamed's candidacy marked the re-emergence of Kenya at the very heart of the pan-African project.

“Kenya is grateful for the strong campaign she ran, which put pan-African themes — of self-reliance, of sovereignty, of openness to trade — at its very heart,” he stated.

At the same time, the Head of State congratulated Chad's Foreign Affairs Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat for winning the African Union Commission Chairperson seat.

President Kenyatta pledged to work with Mahamat "to defend the pan-African agenda of integration for Africa, as well as democracy, sovereignty and prosperity for all of its people.”

“After seven rounds of voting, His Excellency Moussa Faki Mahamat of Chad has been elected Chair of the African Union Commission, at a session of the 28th African Union Summit. Kenya congratulates him on a race well won,” read the President's statement issued by State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu.

Ms Mohamed was defeated by Mahamat who garnered 38 votes in the seventh round despite intense lobbying by the Kenyan team.

During the election held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Ambassador Amina was accompanied by Kenyatta among other delegates to help her lobby for votes.

At the Assembly, the President of Guinea, Alpha Conde, was elected as the President of the African Union replacing Chadian president Idris Deby.
