President Uhuru Kenyatta Promises to Increase Minimum Wage on Labour Day

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday promised to increase the minimum wage on Labour Day.

He stated that better wages would motivate workers to produce quality products, which would ensure more customers.

Kenyatta was speaking during his tour of the United Aryan Company, a garment factory in the Baba Dogo Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Nairobi.

“For the past two years, we have not increased salaries for private sector workers. We are now saying come Labour Day, we will impress on your employers to give you a salary increment,” he remarked.

He, however, urged workers to put in more effort in their respective fields so that they would attract more customers.

“In return, you must do quality work so as to attract more customers for your products.

“I know the difficulties you face as workers. I am working to fix them and I want the private sector to do their bit,” he stated.

Last week during the launch of the National Government Public Information Portal, the head of state admitted that his regime had failed in its promises but insisted they were work in progress.

The Jubilee government has been under constant criticism over the past few years but this move to increase wages might put smiles on the face of workers who for a long time have complained of tough economic times.
